The design and art installations in Old Town
The design and art installations are shaping the character of Old Riga, delighting both locals and visitors. These works can be found along the 11th November Embankment, where a group of nine sculptures titled "Witnesses of the River of Time" has been set up, in Livu Square with the installation "Pavilion," and in Dome Square with the piece "Together at the Dome."
"Witnesses of the River of Time," created by artist Andris Eglītis, is an environmental art installation consisting of nine large-scale sculptures that are practically "inhabitable." This ensemble also serves as a recreational space along the Daugava River.
"Together at the Dome" is an interactive, inhabitable urban art installation located in the heart of Riga's historic center. Positioned in Dome Square, it is accessible to both locals and visitors, with the goal of fostering a friendly environment for social interaction, coexistence, and aesthetic enjoyment in the city's largest square.
The design of the "Pavilion" is a contemporary reference to elements of Riga's architectural language. Romantic in character—like a true city park pavilion—it is shaped like a tower. However, rather than replicating any specific Old Town building, it interprets the tower as an iconic element of a medieval city.
House of the Blackheads
The House of the Blackheads is located right in the heart of Old Riga, facing the Town Hall Square and looking directly at the Riga City Council. Often described as grand and regal, this iconic building is a must-see for every visitor to the city!
One of the world's leading travel information and booking platforms, Tripadvisor, has awarded the House of the Blackheads the "Travelers' Choice Award 2024." This recognition places the House of the Blackheads in the top 10% of the most highly-rated attractions worldwide.
Moreover, according to Tripadvisor, the House of the Blackheads is the most popular tourist attraction in Latvia. Among all the top things to do in Latvia, visiting the House of the Blackheads ranks third, right after Old Riga and the Riga Central Market.
