But at summertime, a dock next to the park is open to all those who would like to take a river tram or a boat.
Why visit
Right in the heart of Riga, Bastejkalns Park offers a quiet escape amid historic surroundings. With winding paths, shaded trees, a canal, bridges, and a picturesque waterfall, it’s ideal for a peaceful walk or just sitting in nature.
Historical highlight
Bastejkalns Park occupies the site of former fortress fortifications - bastions, moats, and ramparts that once protected the city. In the mid-19th century, these were demolished to make way for green space, and the area was reshaped into what became known as Bastion Hill. Landscape architect Georg Kuphaldt oversaw much of the transformation between 1859–1887, during which time paths, gardens, and water features (including the waterfall cascade and canal bridges) were added. Over decades, additional monuments and memorials have been placed there, preserving both the art of landscape design and layers of the city’s history.
How to get there
Bastejkalns Park is easily within walking distance from Riga’s Old Town and Freedom Monument - just stroll across nearby streets and follow signs toward the canal.
