Riga Festival 2018

On the nation's centenary, this year's Riga City Festival will feature the creative legacies of many great Latvians in the context of the country's history and culture. As Riga celebrates its 817th anniversary, one of the more special events to take place will the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Riga Latvian Society: for three whole days Vērmane Park and the Riga Society Building will turn back the pages of history, revealing to festival goers the time more than a century ago when the Riga Latvian Society was established. Cultural and historical facts, theatrical improvisations of great historical figures and open-air performances will allow Rigans and city guests to feel like they were back in the times of mid-19th century Riga.

1st Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art

The inaugural edition of the Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA), titled Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More, runs from 2nd of June until 28th of October 2018. Curated by Katerina Gregos, the biennial takes place at various venues in Riga and Jurmala. Including works by 104 artists (a third of which are from the Baltic countries), the biennial presents a large number of new commissions, 10 outdoor sculptures and ‘site-specific interventions’.

Platu 25 Yachting World Championship 2018

The Platu 25 Yachting World Championship will be held in Riga this year. The championship will take place at the Daugava estuary in the Gulf of Riga, with spectators being able to view the event from the Mangaļsala Pier. Various events will also be held in the Daugava River in downtown Riga, which can be viewed from both sides of the river. Furthermore, it will also be able to view the event on the water as well. This will certainly be one of the most impressive and visually enjoyable events to be held in the Latvian capital this year.

The 24-Hour Basketball Tournament “Battle of the Riverbanks”

Tournament “Battle of the Riverbanks”, in which compete teams of Riga city locals from the right and left side of Daugava River, this year will take place for the ninth time. Traditionally participants include people from major Latvian universities, actors, musicians, entrepreneurs, journalists, politicians, Latvian basketball players of different age groups from the national teams, wheelchair basketball players and other enthusiasts. The competition will be opened by three-point shot and slam dunk contests. Aside from the basketball matches, the best DJ’s in the city and popular musicians will perform on a special stage all 24 hours.

Ballet "At the Blue Danube"
