The exhibition presents the femme fatale, or the fatal woman, in Art Nouveau art. The exhibition shows the idealized, beautiful and diverse image of the femme fatale using objects of applied art and works of art from private collections and the collection of the Riga Art Nouveau Center.
In every age women have played a role and will continue to play a role. In Art Nouveau, her image and role were particularly mystified and glorified, even depicted in highly idealized, feminine and seductive forms. The slim, attractive - and often naked - woman with flowing hair can be found in Art Nouveau ornaments, paintings, book graphics, decorative arts and advertising by artists and designers. The aristocratic ladies of the past, the mythological figures and the realistic depictions in the exhibition paint a multifaceted picture of the evolution of the role and status of women in European society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
