European best destinations 2025 - Riga

The origin of the Great Guild - one of the oldest public buildings in the Baltics - goes back to the first half of the 14th century. It has always been open to cultural and social events.

The edifice of the Great Guild was opened in 1857, featuring Eclecticism with strong English Gothic influences and an outstanding interior. After a fire in 1963, it was reconstructed two years later with a new entrance hall and interior adapted to the needs of a concert hall, becoming the home of the Riga Philharmonic. It is currently being renovated to make it more accessible to the public, with the completion of works scheduled for the end of 2026.

Architectural heritage

The Great Guild has undergone many transformations over the centuries, but its medieval roots remain visible in the building’s structure and layout. The 19th-century redesign introduced Neo-Gothic decorative elements - arched windows, ornate stonework, and richly detailed interiors - reflecting the romantic historicism fashionable at the time.

The reconstruction in the 1960s preserved these artistic features while modernizing the building for concert use. Today, the Great Guild seamlessly blends its centuries-old character with the functionality of a contemporary concert hall.

Home of the Latvian National Symphony orchestra

The Great Guild serves as the main concert venue for the Latvian National Symphony orchestra (LNSO). Known for its exceptional acoustics, the hall hosts classical concerts, chamber music evenings, and performances by both Latvian and world-renowned musicians. Its intimate size and warm sound make it a favourite among performers and audiences alike, cementing its role as one of Latvia’s leading classical music stages.

Why visit

Visiting the Great Guild offers a unique combination of history, architecture, and culture. Whether you attend a concert or simply stop by to admire the building, it’s a chance to experience one of Riga’s most significant medieval landmarks brought to life with modern artistry. Music lovers will appreciate the exceptional programming, while architecture enthusiasts will enjoy the building’s blend of Gothic revival details and historic layers. However, the building is currently being renovated, therefore, we recommend checking the current status before you visit.

Historical highlight

The story of the Great Guild reflects Riga’s commercial and cultural evolution. Originally built as the meeting place for German merchants, it played a key role in the city’s medieval trading life. Over the centuries, it shifted from a guild hall to a cultural centre, hosting concerts, celebrations, and civic events. Its survival through fires, wars, and political changes makes it one of Riga’s most enduring architectural symbols.

How to get there
