The main message of NDAL 2018 communicated through both the award’s visual identity and its conceptual content is Design connects, which highlights the interaction between industries in design and is also reflected in the exhibition’s concept. The exhibition has been devised with the goal of promoting an active process of reference and promoting a meaningful discussion about the need for quality design.

Tall iris exhibition

The summer flower exhibition season at the Latvian Museum of Natural History traditionally kicks-off with the iris. This exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Latvian Gladiolus and Iris Association. Today, the nursing, collecting and breeding of irises has become very popular in Latvia, with about 1,000 different types of bearded irises in the active breeding circle. The exhibition will feature approximately 150 different tall and medium sized iris types and hybrids, which are bred in Latvia and abroad.

Exhibition - Song Day and Song Festival badges from Latvia's region. 19th century to 1940.

Song Day traditions in Latvia began already before the first Song Festival, but especially during the independence years from 1920 to 1940. Not only regional song festival were held in Latgale, Northern Vidzeme, Lower Kurzeme and Zemgale, but in countries and towns throughout the country. Following tradition, special pins were specially made to commemorate not only the nationwide Song Festival, but regional ones as well. The badges were at the time worn proudly by festival participants.

The exhibition Clone (Klons in Latvian) is explained in two aspects. On one hand, a clay klons is an old Latvian identity code, which points out to the origin of the ceramic material and its quality. On the other hand, the word clone highlights the opportunities provided by modern technologies - creating a clone for anything. In combining these two aspects, the artists will search for their ideas through a self-portrait prism.
