Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation

Founded in 1773, the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation is the oldest public museum in Latvia and among the oldest in Europe. Its 16 exhibition halls present the story of Riga’s development over more than 800 years, alongside the history of shipping in the territory of Latvia from the 10th century to the present day.

The museum is housed within the historic ensemble of the Riga Dome Cathedral, a remarkable architectural complex dating from the 13th to the 20th century. It includes the cathedral itself, the Gothic cloister (Cross Gallery) and the museum building, with the elegant 18th-century Column Hall in Classical style standing out as one of its highlights.

The exhibitions feature a rich and unique collection of artefacts, including ancient Latvian jewellery, tools and weapons, a 13th-century “Riga ship,” and weights and measures from the Hanseatic era. Visitors can also see the sword of the Riga executioner, the world’s smallest camera MINOX, fine works by Riga silversmiths, and the legendary figure “Lielais Kristaps” (Great Kristaps), one of the city’s most iconic symbols.

Why visit

The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation offers one of the most comprehensive insights into the past of Riga. It is an ideal stop for visitors who want to understand how the city developed from a small settlement into a major European trading centre.
With extensive exhibitions covering everyday life, trade, culture and maritime history, the museum provides a deeper context to the streets and landmarks you see while exploring Old Town. It is especially rewarding for history enthusiasts, but also accessible for casual visitors thanks to its wide range of exhibits and themes.

Historical highlight

The museum originated from a private collection assembled by Riga physician Nikolaus von Himsel, which was later donated to the city and became the foundation of the institution. Over time, it expanded into a vast collection documenting more than 800 years of Riga’s history, alongside the development of navigation and maritime trade in the region.
Today, the museum preserves hundreds of thousands of items, including artefacts, ship models, maps, everyday objects and decorative pieces, all illustrating the city’s evolution across different historical periods.

How to get there

The museum is located at Palasta iela 4 in Old Town Riga, within the historic ensemble of Riga Dome Cathedral. Public transport stops are located nearby, and the central bus and railway stations are about a 10–15-minute walk from the museum.
