VEF Culture Palace is one of the most notable cultural venues outside the centre of Riga. Built in 1960, it has long hosted a wide range of events, from international meetings and congresses to art exhibitions, theatre productions and performances by well-known foreign artists and local companies. Cultural programmes continue to thrive here today, keeping the building an active part of the city’s creative life.
Industrial roots
The palace takes its name from the former State Electrical Engineering Factory (VEF), once one of Latvia’s largest and most influential industrial enterprises. From the beginning, the building was intended as a cultural centre for workers and the wider community, and it grew into the country’s largest such institution.
Today it remains home to dozens of artistic groups and studios, along with a packed calendar of concerts, festivals, ceremonies and community events.
Event spaces and facilities
VEF Culture Palace offers several versatile halls suited to performances and large gatherings. The main theatre seats over 800 guests across its orchestra and balcony levels, with additional standing capacity and a technically advanced stage featuring a movable platform.
The Chamber Hall provides a more intimate setting for audiences of 300–400, meanwhile, the spacious foyers with balconies are also frequently used for exhibitions and various events, while two on-site cafés add to the venue’s appeal for longer visits and special occasions.
